The Piaseczner Rebbe: Despair and Meaning After a Fall

Despair is not the fall itself, but the belief that the fall has no meaning.

A reflection on the teaching
The saying printed here asks what happens when a setback seems entirely empty. Finding meaning need not mean knowing why Hashem allowed something to happen. We should not invent an explanation for another person's suffering. A more modest question is what response remains possible: receiving help, repairing a mistake or learning something about our needs. That may restore a little direction without making the pain disappear. When discouragement closes every door, begin with one available action. Meaning may become clearer through how we live afterwards, rather than through a complete answer today.
