The Kotzker Rebbe on Searching for Hidden Redemption

A father and children searching for the afikoman at home, beside a quote attributed to the Kotzker Rebbe.

Why do we hide the Afikoman? Because all great things are hidden. The light of the world is hidden, the soul is hidden, and the ultimate redemption is hidden. We must search for it.

A reflection on the teaching

The afikoman search becomes a way of thinking about things that matter but are not immediately visible. A person's neshama, the good within a difficult situation, and the possibility of redemption may require patient attention. Hidden does not mean absent. In everyday life, this can mean looking beyond a first impression of ourselves or someone else. It can also mean making room for hope before we see a result. The Pesach image invites a simple question: what good am I overlooking because I expected it to be obvious?
