The Kotzker Rebbe: Truth Cannot Be Imitated

Everything in this world can be imitated, except for the truth. For a truth that is imitated is no longer the truth.

A reflection on the teaching
We can copy the outward form of a sincere act without bringing the same attention to it. The image applies that contrast to connection: being near people is different from being present with them. The saying asks us to examine where we are performing a role rather than entering it honestly. A tefillah, an apology or a conversation deserves our actual involvement. We do not need to manufacture an impressive feeling. Begin by doing one part truthfully, even if it is simple. What would real attention look like in the interaction in front of you?
