Rav Tzadok: Searching for Hashem Within the Heart

Black lettering over pink clouds with a quotation attributed to Rav Tzadok about searching within the heart.

We humans chase over the world to find things: we climb high mountains; we descend to the nethermost depths of the sea; we trek to the wilderness and to the desert. There is one place where we neglect to search–our heart. But it is there we will find G-d.

A reflection on the teaching

Searching for meaning can send us toward distant places and new experiences. This saying asks whether we have given the same attention to the life within us. Looking into the heart can mean acknowledging what we long for, what we fear and where we already sense a responsibility toward Hashem. It need not replace learning or guidance. It can make them more personal. Before seeking another answer elsewhere, sit quietly and ask what you already know deserves your attention. Sometimes an honest inner question gives the next learning a clearer purpose.
