Nesivos Shalom: Staying Connected When You Fall

A mountain traveler kneels and holds a tree near a rocky ledge, beside a Nesivos Shalom quote on staying connected.

A person’s greatness is not measured by how high he rises, but by how deeply he remains connected when he falls.

A reflection on the teaching

A good period can make emunah feel easy to speak about. A difficult period asks a different question: what helps us remain connected when we cannot see the progress? The teaching printed here values that relationship during a fall. Connection may take the form of a short tefillah, reaching out to a trusted person or keeping one modest commitment. We do not have to manufacture a feeling of strength. We can choose something that keeps us from disappearing into discouragement. What is one thread of connection you can hold onto today?
