The Maggid of Mezritch: Finding Insight After a Fall

Seven times the righteous person stumbles and yet he rises again.” (Mishlei 24:16)
It is important for a righteous person to fall down seven times, because after each fall, the righteous person discovers some sparks of insight on the way up.

A reflection on the teaching
The image pairs a verse from Mishlei with a teaching about learning on the way back up. We do not have to seek mistakes in order to grow. When they happen, however, we can ask what they reveal about a pattern, a limit or an unmet need. That question gives the return some direction. What made this setback more likely, and what would support a better response next time? The insight may be small. Using it makes the experience more than another reason to criticize ourselves. The commentary's attribution remains unverified.
Source note: The opening verse was checked against Mishlei 24:16. The subsequent commentary and its attribution to Rabbi Dov Ber have not been independently verified.
