The goal is not perfection — it’s authenticity.

A reflection on the teaching

The saying printed here invites honesty about where we actually stand. An appearance of perfection can make it difficult to admit a struggle, receive guidance or begin useful work. Authenticity means bringing our real starting point into avodas Hashem. It does not mean that every impulse should be accepted as a guide. We can be honest about our weaknesses and still work to change them. Ask what you would acknowledge if you did not need to look impressive. That acknowledgement may make the next step clearer and more manageable.
