A reflection on the teaching
The size of an action does not reveal everything about its motive. We can do something impressive while avoiding the responsibility that is actually ours. We can also do a quiet mitzvah with real attention and honesty. This saying asks us to examine that difference without dismissing good deeds. Before taking on another large undertaking, it may help to ask what we are hoping it will accomplish. Is there a smaller, less visible task that needs us more? Choosing it can be an expression of inner truth.
