Rabbi Chaim of Tzanz: Praying to Be Able to Pray

Before I begin to recite my prayers, I pray to be able to pray.

A reflection on the teaching
We can arrive at davening with the words ready and the heart elsewhere. The saying printed here makes even that difficulty part of the conversation with Hashem. Asking for help to pray is already an honest beginning. We do not have to wait until we feel inspired before turning toward Him. A simple request for attention, sincerity or patience may help us enter the tefillah more consciously. Before starting, pause briefly and name what you need help with. The request can be small enough to be real.
