During the week gravity pulls us down, on Shabbos gravity pulls our souls up.

A reflection on the teaching

The image uses gravity as a metaphor for the pull of the week and the uplift of Shabbos. Weekday responsibilities can keep our attention on tasks, deadlines and what remains unfinished. Shabbos gives another kind of rhythm, with room for tefillah, learning, family and rest. We can prepare to enter that rhythm rather than carry every weekday pressure into it. Choose one concern to put down before Shabbos, and one part of Shabbos to approach with undivided attention. That may help the soul experience the lift described here.
