The Downward Ladder
2026-02-01
Many people believe that if they are not doing anything wrong, they are standing still.
This world is like a escalator moving downward. If a person does not climb, he slides. There is no true neutral.
Doing nothing is not “staying the same.” It is slowly moving backward without noticing it.
CBT says the same thing. Inaction strengthens old habits. Avoidance reinforces fear. What we call “staying the same” is usually a quiet decline.
The solution is not to overhaul your life. It is to take one small upward step each day. One honest question. One moment of patience. One act of gratitude.
These small steps stop the slide and start the climb.
The Baal HaSulam describes spiritual life as a ladder made of steps, each one representing a higher state of awareness and service.
A ladder is built for climbing. If a person refuses to move upward, he does not stay in place for long. Eventually he slides.
This week, choose one daily step that moves you upward, even slightly. It is enough to change the direction of your entire ladder.
