Showing Up Is the Work

2026-02-01

A chassid once told his Rebbe, “When I daven, my mind keeps wandering. I try to focus, but worries and distractions keep coming back. I feel like I’m failing. What’s the point?”

The Rebbe answered with a parable.

A king hired a guard to stand at the palace gate and keep strangers out. All day long, people kept trying to enter.

At the end of the day, the guard felt discouraged. “So many attempts. I must not be doing well.”

The king said, “Your job was not to stop the attempts. Your job was to stay at the gate and keep sending them away. That’s exactly what you did.”

The Rebbe said, “That’s how it works with Hashem. Your job is not to eliminate struggle. Your job is to keep returning.”

The same is true far beyond tefillah. In habits. In relationships. In teshuvah. In growth.

The setbacks are not proof you’re failing. They are part of the work. The success is in showing up again.

Do not measure your growth by how smooth the road was. Measure it by how many times you came back and tried again.

That choice, repeated, is the breakthrough.
