Divrei Shmuel: Honest Service Beyond Achievement

A person is not judged by how much he achieves, but by how honestly he serves.

A reflection on the teaching
Achievements are visible; sincerity and effort are often harder to measure. This Slonimer saying asks us to examine the quality of our service alongside the result. Two people may face very different circumstances while doing equally honest work. We can ask whether we have used today's abilities responsibly without reducing the answer to a number. That does not excuse avoiding a task. It directs us toward a fairer account of what the task asks of us. What would honest service look like in the responsibility you have today?
