A person can survive without food for days but not for one day without meaning,

A reflection on the teaching

The contrast with food expresses how deeply a person needs purpose. It is a saying about meaning, rather than a literal claim about physical survival. An ordinary day can feel different when we know what we are caring for: a mitzvah, a person or a responsibility that deserves our effort. We do not need a dramatic mission to find that connection. Before beginning a task, name why it matters and whom it serves. A small act done with that awareness can give the day a clearer direction.
