Don’t Turn Back Too Quickly
2026-02-01
In Parshat Beshalach, the Jewish people had already left Egypt. The slavery was over. The chains were gone.
And yet, when they stood at the Yam Suf and saw the Egyptians chasing them, panic set in.
They cried out and said it would have been better to stay where they were.
This wasn’t because they wanted slavery. It was because slavery felt safer.
Leaving Egypt happened in one night. Letting Egypt leave them took much longer.
Years of being powerless, dependent, and controlled do not disappear the moment freedom begins. The body may leave first, but the mindset lags behind.
Sometimes newness feels scary, wrong, or “off.”
A chassid once told his Rebbe, “Since I’ve changed, I feel lost. Maybe I should go back.”
The Rebbe said, “You were asleep before. Now you’re awake. Don’t mistake discomfort for failure.”
Sometimes the real breakthrough is not rushing forward, but not turning back too soon.
