Chanukah: Revealing the Goodness Within
2025-12-18
On Chanukah, we often think the goal of light is to remove darkness entirely. But that’s not really the lesson.
The Sfas Emes teaches:
“The light of Chanukah doesn’t come to cancel the darkness, but to reveal what was hidden.”
It’s not really about getting rid of the darkness or eliminating all flaws. Rather, we are trying to uncover the good, the positive spark that’s already there.
A prominent rabbi was learning with a small group in the diamond district in New York. He was asked why he spent so much time helping those considered “low-lives.” He answered with a question: “If you had a lump of dirt with a diamond hidden inside, would you throw it away?” They all said, “Of course not. We’re experts in diamonds. We’d see the value.” The rabbi said, “Exactly. I’m an expert in people. I know that inside each person, even those covered in ‘dirt,’ is a diamond in the rough, waiting to be revealed.”
That’s what Chanukah is about. We’re not here to erase the darkness. We’re here to reveal the goodness inside. Your job isn’t to become perfect overnight. It’s to let the small, honest light you have shine through the layers of “dirt” and show the goodness that was there all along.
“Hashem desires a person’s small, honest light more than a perfection that isn’t truly his.”
— Kedushas Levi
This Chanukah, remember: Hashem wants your genuine light, not borrowed perfection. Light the little flame you have, and let it reveal the beauty that’s already inside you.
