CBT ToolTalk #45: Getting Unstuck — Choosing Life Instead of Staying Safe
2025-11-19
There’s a strange comfort in being stuck.
We say we want change, but deep down we hold onto what’s familiar - even if it feels limiting.
Because staying stuck feels safer than stepping into the unknown.
In CBT this is called emotional avoidance - when fear of discomfort keeps us looping in place.
We tell ourselves: “I’ll move when I feel ready.”
But waiting until we feel ready is often the trap.
The Torah says it clearly:
“וְלִפְנֵיכֶם חַיִּים וּמָוֶת… בָּחַר בַּחַיִּים.” - Devarim 30:19
“I have set before you life and death… therefore choose life.”
This isn’t only about big decisions - it’s about the countless small ones:
Do I stay where I am, or do I take a step forward?
Here’s what’s happening inside:
-You know change is needed, but the known discomfort feels safer than the uncertainty ahead.
-Your brain says: “Better stay here than risk failing again.”
-Your body relaxes into the routine of being stuck - even while your heart longs for growth.
🧭 Getting Practical: Action Before Motivation
Waiting for inspiration is the enemy of progress.
Think of one area you’ve been avoiding - a conversation, a project, a personal goal.
Take one tiny action toward it today - even if you don’t feel ready.
Replace the question “Do I feel ready?” with:
“What’s one step toward life right now?”
Takeaway
“פִּתְחוּ לִי פֶּתַח כְּחוּדָהּ שֶׁל מַחַט - וַאֲנִי אֶפְתַּח לָכֶם פֶּתַח כְּפִתְחוֹ שֶׁל אוּלָם.”
“Open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle - and I will open for you an opening like the entrance to a great hall.”
(Gemara, Yoma 38b)
When we begin to act - even imperfectly - Hashem expands our steps into real change.
Choosing life means choosing movement.
And that’s where real living begins.
