CBT ToolTalk #38: “That 10% Voice Is Enough” — The Power of Small Beginnings
2025-08-14
“Even if 90% of me wants to give in… is it worth listening to the tiny 10% that still says no?”
Yes. That’s often where the battle is won.
When urges, fears, or old patterns take over, our brain’s threat-response system hijacks rational thinking. We feel an all-or-nothing pressure - either total success or total failure.
CBT teaches that we can scale down the battlefield. We don’t have to win the war in one shot. We only have to win the next choice.
When you are tempted to do something that you know is wrong, ask yourself: “Is there even 10% of me that doesn’t want to do this?” Then give yourself permission to listen to that voice.
Shlomo HaMelech encouraged us with this very idea:
דברי חכמים בנחת נשמעים מזעקת מושל בכסילים
“The words of the wise, spoken quietly, are heard more than the cry of a ruler among fools.”
Kohelet 9:17
⚔️ The Small Voice vs. the Yetzer Hara
The Yetzer Hara (evil inclination) works in extremes:
It says, “If you can’t do it perfectly, don’t bother.”
It pressures: “If you already stumbled, you might as well give in all the way.”
But the prophet instructed us to listen differently. Even if that voice is faint, follow it and change direction.
Yeshayahu 30:21
ואזניך תשמענה דבר מאחריך לאמר זה הדרך לכו בו
“Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying: This is the way - walk in it.”
When you have those negative automatic thoughts, reframe and allow yourself to listen to the quiet voice of reason.
Automatic thought: “It’s pointless; I’ve already blown it today.”
Reframe: “I still have a 10% part of me that doesn’t want this - let me give that part the microphone.”
This is called anchoring in partial commitment - holding on to even a small motivator to prevent total collapse.
🛠 Getting Practical: How to Use the 10% Voice
Name It and give yourself permission to listen to the small voice.
Say: “Part of me wants to stop - I give myself permission to listen to it. Hashem, help me follow that part.”
Act Immediately
Don’t negotiate with the Yetzer Hara. If the 10% speaks, take one small action right away: step outside, close the tab, call a friend.
Use Torah as Oxygen
Even a short pasuk or thought can strengthen the small voice.
Example: סור מרע ועשה טוב בקש שלום ורדפהו (Tehillim 34:15) - “Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.”
Thank Hashem for the Battle
The Mesillat Yesharim writes that the battlefield is where greatness is forged. Thank Hashem for the fight, not just the victory.
Hashem doesn’t demand we be perfect - only that we answer the small voice when it calls.
